Albert Riera begins work as Red Star Belgrade head coach

Red Star Belgrade presented Albert Riera as their new head coach on 16 August. The Spanish coach signed a two-year contract and immediately began his work with Red Star's first team. His first European test comes against Viktoria Plzen.

The appointment gives Red Star a new coach during an important part of the season. Riera has only a short preparation period before the next European match. He said the current players would receive the first opportunity to show their quality.

The club confirmed a two-year agreement

Red Star announced Riera's appointment on 14 August. The formal presentation followed two days later at the Rajko Mitic Stadium. Club officials explained the decision before Riera answered questions about his work. The contract covers two seasons and extends beyond the next European tie. However, his first working week is focused on the players already available in Belgrade.

Riera did not promise immediate transfers during his presentation. He said he wanted to assess the current squad first. Recruitment discussions would follow only after that direct review. This sequence keeps the first decisions connected to training. Riera watches movement, communication and fitness at close range. Riera began his senior coaching career with Olimpija Ljubljana.

He won the Slovenian league and cup during the 2022/23 season. He later worked with Celje, Bordeaux and Eintracht Frankfurt. Celje reached the Conference League quarter-finals under Riera in 2024/25. The team also won the Slovenian Cup. Those results form the strongest completed period of his coaching career.

His time in Bordeaux and Frankfurt brought different conditions. Both jobs added experience outside Slovenia. Red Star now becomes his first senior coaching position in Serbian football. Riera also played in Spain, England, Greece, Turkey and Italy. That playing career exposed him to several coaching methods. His Red Star work will show which ideas remain useful in Belgrade.

Riera asked supporters to judge the team through its style and results. He accepted the pressure attached to Red Star. He also said every player would begin with an equal chance.
