Red Star Belgrade are already working actively on strengthening the squad ahead of the new season and the Champions League qualifiers. The club’s general director, Zvezdan Terzić, said on RTS morning programme that negotiations with potential new signings are entering the final stage.
Terzić stressed that despite another domestic double and Red Star’s continued dominance in Serbian football, the club cannot afford to relax. According to him, staying at the top is the most difficult task, and Red Star want to be fully prepared for the upcoming European campaign.
“We certainly will not relax. We have been working on reinforcements for six months. We know where we need fresh options and in which areas of the team. I will not reveal names, but we are in the final stage of negotiations with attacking players and a centre-back,” Terzić said.
The Red Star executive also noted that the club plans to keep the core of the team together. However, serious offers could arrive during the summer for several players, including Kostov and Avdić. The main goal is to build a squad capable of competing not only in the Serbian SuperLiga, but also on the European stage.
Terzić reminded that Red Star have had some unpleasant experiences in European qualifiers in recent years, which is why this summer’s preparation is being treated with particular seriousness. The fans expect another push towards the Champions League, and the club’s management wants new signings to arrive before the start of pre-season.
In addition to sporting plans, Terzić also spoke about the reconstruction of the stadium. The Marakana will remain at its current location, but the club intends to significantly modernize the venue. One of the priorities will be covering a larger part of the stands, as more than 80 percent of the seats are currently not protected from weather conditions. The works are expected to begin next year.
Red Star will play several strong friendly matches during pre-season. The final test before the new campaign is scheduled for July 12 against Zenit, while earlier, during the training camp in Austria, the Serbian champions will face LASK Linz.
