Novak Djokovic has returned to the Cincinnati Open for the first time since 2023. The Serbian is making his sixteenth appearance at the tournament. He enters the men's draw as the third seed.

Djokovic opens against Thiago Agustin Tirante of Argentina. Tirante reached the second round after winning his opening match on Thursday. The meeting gives Djokovic his first competitive test since Wimbledon.

The return follows a healthy break after Wimbledon

Djokovic did not enter the Montreal Masters before travelling to Cincinnati. He used the period after Wimbledon for recovery and training. The break was shorter and easier than several recent pauses after major tournaments.

The Serbian said his body responded well after the grass season. He therefore wanted one hard-court event before the US Open. Cincinnati provides that preparation without adding another tournament to his schedule.

Cincinnati holds an important place in his career

Djokovic first completed the Career Golden Masters in Cincinnati during 2018. He beat Roger Federer in that final and became the first man to win all nine active Masters events. He later added another Cincinnati title in 2020. His latest appearance produced a third trophy in 2023. Djokovic defeated Carlos Alcaraz after three demanding sets. The match lasted almost four hours and ended with a deciding tie-break.

Djokovic described that final as one of his three best Masters finals played over three sets. Heat affected both players before the evening finish. The result also ended his previous Cincinnati visit with the title.

Second Cincinnati title 2020 Won the event for a second time

The 2023 final required three different responses

Alcaraz won the opening set of the 2023 final by 7-5. Djokovic answered by taking the second set in a tie-break. He then won another tie-break to complete the title after three hours and 49 minutes. Djokovic saved a championship point during the second set. Alcaraz later saved four championship points before the match ended. Those moments explain why Djokovic still places the contest among his strongest Masters finals.

The two players dealt with direct sun, shade and an evening finish during one match. Their latest Cincinnati meeting lasted much longer than a routine best-of-three contest. It remains the most recent match Djokovic played at this tournament.

Tirante earned the second-round meeting

Tirante entered the main draw with a first-round assignment on Thursday. He needed two hours and 56 minutes to complete that match. The victory placed him opposite the third seed in the next round. The Argentine also defeated Taylor Fritz in Montreal one week earlier. That victory showed his recent hard-court form against a leading opponent. Cincinnati now gives him another match against a top seed.

Tirante has already spent almost three hours on court in Cincinnati. Djokovic enters after receiving a first-round bye. Their different routes meet in Saturday's second-round schedule.

The draw gives Djokovic a direct start in round two

A seeded player receives a first-round bye in this section of the draw. Djokovic therefore begins his campaign in the second round. Tirante has already completed one full match on the same surface. The format remains best of three sets. A player needs two sets to advance. A final-set tie-break applies if the deciding set reaches six games each.

Cincinnati uses outdoor hard courts and a combined men's and women's programme.

Saturday contains 31 matches across the grounds. Djokovic is one of several leading seeds beginning their campaigns that day.

One tournament separates Cincinnati from New York

The Cincinnati Open runs until 23 August. The US Open begins on 31 August. That calendar leaves one week between the Masters final and the start of the major in New York. Djokovic has chosen Cincinnati as his only event during that period. The decision gives him match practice without a second weekly tournament. His progress in the draw will determine the number of matches he receives.

Cincinnati gives Djokovic competitive hard-court minutes before New York. A longer run would add several matches during the same week. An early defeat would leave more training time before the major.

The tournament follows the same hard-court sequence

Cincinnati is the final Masters 1000 event before the US Open. Djokovic entered the draw as the third seed and received a first-round bye. His first match therefore comes against Thiago Agustin Tirante in the second round. The Serbian last played this tournament during his 2023 title run.

Djokovic begins the event at number five in the ATP ranking. The Cincinnati draw lists him as the third seed.

His previous Cincinnati visit ended with a match point saved

Djokovic lost the first set of the 2023 final and trailed during the second. He saved a championship point before winning the tie-break 9-7. The deciding set also reached a tie-break, which he won 7-4 after three hours and 49 minutes.

That victory gave Djokovic his third Cincinnati title. His first title came in 2018, when he completed victories at all nine active Masters tournaments. The 2026 appearance begins with a different opponent and a new draw. Only the earlier tournament record carries into the week.
